PTO Meeting

September 17, 2008

A regular meeting of the Parent Teacher Organization was held Wednesday, Sept 17, 2008 in the Science lab of the Cornwall-On-Hudson Elementary School. All PTO officers were in attendance except Laurie Smith.

Call to Order: PTO Co-President, AnnMarie Dunn called the meeting to order at 7:38 p.m. Introductions of all board members and Mr. Schmidt were made.

Review and Acceptance of June 11, 2008 minutes:

Joanne Incognoli made a motion to accept the minutes with a second from Dawn Ackerman.

Principal’s Report:  Mr. Schmidt reported on the following items:

-   The first day of school went very smoothly including kindergarten.

-   Total enrollment is 229 students with class sizes as follows:

-   September 8th was the first bus drill of the year.  It was the first of three to be held in this year.

-   Open house was held on September 10th.

-   A moment of silence was held in remembrance of September 11th.

-   School Pictures were taken on September 12th.

-   The school held their I am lovable and capable day.

-   COHES has been selected as a site for the upcoming motion picture “Handsome Harry” with approximately 5 to 6 scenes being filmed in our school.

-   The “Making Friends” assembly for the 1st grade is being scheduled.  This assembly is a classroom puppet presentation done by the Hudson Valley Development Disabilities group.

-   The 4th Grade will be visiting Sands Ring Homestead over the next two weeks for an Early American event.  This program will be covered by the district this year.

-   The basketball and walkway to be refurbished over the upcoming Jewish holiday.

Upcoming Events:

o       September 19th – Geography T-Shirt Day

o       September 19th – 1st Friday Morning Opening

This year the Friday Morning Openings are being coordinated by Mr. and Mrs. Joya and the 4th Grade Friday Morning Opening Club

o       September 24th – 1st Grand Apple Day

o       Fall Book Fair

o       Halloween Spooktacular

o       Yankee Candle Fundraiser

Officer Reports:

President

-   The board met this summer to discuss the possibility of replacing the Popcorn Sales with Bake / Healthy Snack Sales.  Mr. Schmidt is to discuss this issue with the teachers and nurse and report his findings back.

-   Kim Poje reported that in the past 150 yearbooks were ordered per year.  This year only 100 were ordered as only 39 yearbooks were ordered in grades K-3 and 44 were purchased by the PTO for the 4th grade class.  Each yearbook cost $23.75 and they are expected in this week.

First Vice President

-   Kristen deBree reported that the Executive Council PTO members met to outline an agenda for the first Executive Council meeting to be held on September 22nd.

-   The PTO membership drive is in full swing with 57 families (74 students) having joined thus far.  These numbers are significantly lower than last year’s.

-   Volunteer numbers are also down with several events having less than 2 volunteers.

Second Vice President (via proxy)

-   The Yankee Candle Fundraiser is set to kick off October 1st.  This event is being coordinated by Lori Smith

-   The Ultimate Cards Fundraiser is set for the end of November thru December.  This event is being coordinated by Wendy Cucci.

-   Joanne Incognoli has organized a reusable tote bag fundraiser.  The environmental friendly bags will be sold for $3.00 each or $4.00 for $10.00.

Treasurer

-   Dawn Ackerman reported that the 2007-2008 books remain open as she is still getting reimbursement requests for last year.

-   Reimbursement requests must be submitted no longer than 45 days after the event.

-   The school sound system is being replaced by the PTO and Kids Klub.  The $2946.50 was accounted for in the 2007-2008 budget.

-   Items to still be paid from the 2007-2008 budge include author visits and the church where the faculty luncheon was held.

-   AnnMarie Dunn made a motion to accept the 2008-2009 budget.  This motion was seconded by Joanne Incognoli thereby approving the budget.

-   The issue of Clearwater is to be tabled until the October meeting.

 Corresponding Secretary

Grade Parent Chairperson

-   Joanne Incognoli reported that Head Grade Parents and Assistant Grade Parents have been selected for all the classes.

-   Currently Ms. Crispo’s 3rd grade class is missing an Assistant Grade Parent.

Hospitality

-   Sonja Briggs reported that the new parent welcome was a success.

-   The open house welcome was also a success.

Committee Reports:

·        The Box Top Summer Challenge deadline is October 3rd with all entires being submitted to Alicia Huges.  The first place winner will receive a $25.00 gift certificate to Village pizza while the three runner ups will receive spirit prizes.

·        In was recommended that a Gardening Committee be formed to maintain the flower beds.  This committee is to be co-chaired by Rose Tamberini and Rachael Skigen.

·        Pam McArdle volunteered to co-chair the Student Banking Program with Missy Berrean.

·        SEPTO is hosting a Family Awareness Day on October 4th.  They have invited the PTO to use this event as a Fundraiser.  Pam McArdle volunteered to coordinate this event.

·        Kids Klub is looking for 2 parents to volunteer for the six weeks that the Mad Science Club and Chess Club are in session.

·        The position of Recording Secretary still remains open.
